Tandemonium 2020

Tandemonium as Tandem Cyclists Highlight Cycling Road Safety

Fifty participants from Perth’s tandem cycling community formed a processional ride for road safety along the South Perth foreshore, as part of Tandemonium, Perth’s inaugural tandem muster for road safety. Hosted by the Western Australian Tandem Cycling Advisory Council (WATCAC) the event attracted a wide range of tandem and solo cyclists as part of National Road Safety Week 2020.

Speaking on the importance of mutual respect among road users and joining in the procession, cycling enthusiast and Member for Thornlie Mr Chris Tallentire attended for the Minister for Road Safety Michelle Roberts. WATCAC also welcomed Mr Phil Taylor from WA’s peak cycling organisation WestCycle, who identified road safety as critical to cycling for urban mobility.

“From fellow tandem cyclists who took the opportunity to chat about their experiences on the bike to our WA Police representative, everyone contributed to a fun and informative morning,” says WATCAC President Erin McGlew. “A huge thank you to the many people, old friends and new, who made the day a success.”

WATCAC supports cyclists who are blind or vision impaired to be part of Western Australia’s growing cycling community and to participate in community cycling events. Fully sighted pilots take to the front of the bike and are paired with blind or vision impaired stokers on the back, forming partnerships based on a shared love of cycling.

“While the day provided a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the joys of cycling, particularly tandem cycling, we acknowledge that safety on our roads is still a concern for all road users,” says Erin. “That’s why we’re encouraging people to drive so others survive and to share the roads.”

WATCAC gratefully acknowledges that the inaugural tandem muster was held with the support of the Minister for Road Safety and the WA Road Safety Commission. The road safety messages promoted at the event were made possible through funding from the Road Trauma Trust Account.
